Raukawa Hut

Raukawa Hut (also referred to as Raukawa Lodge) is a Department of Conservation backcountry lodge in the Catchpool Valley / Ōrongorongo Valley area of Remutaka Forest Park. It’s a locked, sole-occupancy hut on the east side of the Ōrongorongo River terrace, reached after crossing the river from the end of the Ōrongorongo Track; wet feet are part of the approach.

The lodge has 14 bunk beds and is set up for self-catering. It provides a gas cooking hob, crockery, pots and cooking utensils, wood heating with a wetback for a hot shower, cold tap water, and a flush toilet. Lighting is not provided—bring candles or a torch (and matches or a lighter). Access is by an access code sent with your booking confirmation.

Stay access is by booking only, with sole-occupancy use and no spaces held for walk-ins. The Ōrongorongo River is not safe to cross in all conditions: if it’s flooded, rising, or rain is forecast, don’t attempt the crossing; you may be eligible for a refund if you have to cancel due to river safety.

Approach is a 2-hour walk via the Ōrongorongo Track, then about a 10-minute walk from Turere Bridge. From the picnic area/toilet near the bridge, cross to the true left of the river, follow the markers downstream about 250 m, passing the Tararua Tramping Club hut; Raukawa Lodge is marked with a large orange triangle and sign.
