Boar Inn

Boar Inn is a serviced DOC backcountry hut in Remutaka Forest Park (Catchpool Valley and Ōrongorongo Valley) in the Wellington/Kāpiti region. It’s a compact hut that sleeps 4 people as a single unit and is intended for sole occupancy; it’s locked and requires advance booking for access.

Facilities include a wood burner (with firewood provided), tank water, and a pit toilet. Bring your own cooking gear; the hut provides crockery/cutlery, while lighting typically requires candles or a torch, plus matches or a lighter.

Access is via the Ōrongorongo River area with the hut on the east side of the river. Expect a hike of about 1–3 hours from the road end (around 2 hours 30 minutes via the Ōrongorongo Track), and plan on crossing the river as part of the approach.

The Ōrongorongo River is hazardous in flood or rain; don’t attempt the crossing when levels are rising or rain is forecast. Bookings have an access code routed through the booking confirmation, and the hut is eligible for refund if you must cancel due to river safety concerns.

Fees run for up to 4 people, with DOC rates given for off-peak and peak periods (fees to 30 June 2026 were listed as $50 off-peak and $61 peak). Bookings are open for stays up to 30 June 2027; if the hut is fully booked online, it is fully booked with no spaces held for walk-ins.
