Black Hill Hut

Black Hill Hut is a standard six-bunk backcountry hut in the Oxford Forest Conservation Area in Canterbury. It’s run by the Department of Conservation and is intended for first-come, first-served stays; no standard bookings are required, but you must purchase a Standard Hut Ticket for each night and place it in the honesty box at the hut (or use a Backcountry Hut Pass for unlimited use at most standard and serviced huts for a 12-month period).

The hut has six bunks, plus a fireplace and mattresses. Drinking water is untreated. Toilets are pit latrines, and the hut is set up for wilderness-style self-sufficiency: bring everything you need for sleeping, cooking, and safe water treatment.
