Lilburne Hut
Lilburne Hut is a small backcountry hut in the Lees Valley area of Canterbury, New Zealand, accessed on private pastoral land. The hut is made up of two joined single-men’s huts (“The Shed”) and has very rudimentary facilities with a logbook that dates back to 1970.
Sleeping is limited (6 bunks), so plan for a quiet, low-use stay rather than expecting a busy hut. Access is restricted: the hut cannot be booked in advance, and visiting requires prior permission from Lees Valley Station—unapproved entry on the working farmland is not permitted, though foot access is allowed via marked trails such as routes to Tarn Hut and onward via Townshend.
