Wharfedale Hut

Wharfedale Hut is a backcountry hut run by the Department of Conservation in the Oxford Forest Conservation Area (Canterbury). It’s a standard 10-bunk hut in the North Canterbury and Arthur’s Pass area, typically used for overnight stays accessed by walking tracks from nearby road ends.

Use is first come, first served—no bookings are required. You’ll need a Standard Hut Ticket (blue for adults, yellow for youth) for each night; an alternative is a Backcountry Hut Pass that covers unlimited use at most Standard and Serviced huts for 12 months. The hut has sleeping provisions (mattress) and a fireplace, with toilets provided as a pit latrine; there’s no drinking water provided, so plan to bring your own.
