Burn Hut
Burn Hut is a basic six-bunk backcountry hut in Tararua Forest Park, run by the Department of Conservation. It’s a first-come, first-served hut (no bookings required), with mattresses provided and an outhouse for toilets (pit latrine disposal). Water is untreated, so treat it before drinking.
Approach is via road off SH57 at Shannon: follow signs to the Mangaore Power Village for about 5 km, pass the Mangahao Hydro Electric Power Station, then drive the winding metal road past Tokomaru No 3 reservoir to reach the start at Mangahao No 2 reservoir. The hut is reached by track in about 3 to 4 hours, typically sidling down the true right of the river, climbing to the bush line, then following the ridge to the hut on a small spur. From Burn Hut back toward Mangahao Dam No. 1 takes about 3 to 4 hours; this downstream route includes river crossings that can be impassable after heavy rain.
