South Ohau Hut
South Ohau Hut is a Department of Conservation backcountry hut in Tararua Forest Park (Wellington/Kapiti region). It’s a standard 10-bunk hut for overnight use on the South Ohau area track network, and it’s intended for first-come, first-served stays—no standard bookings are required, but you need a hut ticket for each night (one per night) and place it in the honesty box at the hut.
Facilities include a wood burner for heating, mattresses, and a pit latrine. Drinking water is available but untreated, so bring treatment. The access route starts from the end of Poads Road; the hut is about 16 km and typically takes 8–9 hours on foot from there, with the first kilometre of track crossing private farmland before you enter the forest park.
