Tokamoru Shelter

Tokamoru Shelter (also known as Ian & Frank’s Hut) is a free, non-bookable backcountry hut on the Te Araroa Trail in New Zealand’s Manawatū-Whanganui region. It’s designed for hiker use and provides basic sleeping platforms, with a covered outdoor cooking area and a nearby creek as a water option (filter or treat before drinking).

The shelter fits about 4–8 people on bunk platforms and uses a privy/long-drop toilet. Sleeping gear is essential because there are no mattresses provided; bring your own sleeping bag (and mattress/groundsheet). If the hut is full, there’s space nearby to pitch a tent in the same area.

Use is first-come, first-served since no beds can be reserved, so arriving earlier improves your chances of getting a platform. Follow leave-no-trace habits—pack out rubbish—and leave the hut clean (sweep the floor and wipe benches before you go).
