Cabane d'Archail

Cabane d'Archail is a backcountry mountain shelter at 1,667 m used as a refuge libre (unstaffed) when it’s open to hikers. Expect sleeping space for up to 6, and plan around a wood stove for heat; there is no fireplace and the shelter is basic. Inside, there are multiple rooms including two areas on the main level and an upstairs area that can be used by hikers when the lower floor is occupied by a herder during the summer grazing period.

Use in the main pastoral period is restricted: the refuge is used by shepherds from July through the end of October, so it is closed to the public during that time. Access is from Archail or via the Barre des Dourbes, and the water point is at the Pas d'Archail area (a short walk downhill), with flow that varies by season.
