Alpine hut

Cabane du Plat is a non-guarded mountain hut in France’s Chartreuse/Fontaine area (at 1310 m). Access is via the marked route starting from Saint-Pierre-de-Chartreuse up to the Col du Frenay, then continuing by a piste near 1190 m to the more pleasant line toward 1270 m before you climb into the prairie to reach the hut.

Use is free and no reservation system is involved: it’s first-come, first-served. The hut is unstaffed, so you carry your own food and water and pack out all trash. Inside, you’ll find a small table and simple sleeping space for up to about five people, plus a functional wood-burning stove used for warmth.

The interior is rustic and the wood stove/emissions setup may be temperamental; plan to arrive self-sufficient and stove-ready. There is a water source close by (within about 100 m), and a nearby source called Source du Plat.

Recent notes describe volunteer maintenance work such as stabilizing and improving the stove setup (including the flue/coude) and tidying the hut spaces, so the hut is intended to be kept in usable condition by the community.
