Chalet du Plain du Canon
Chalet du Plain du Canon is a backcountry hut run by the Club Alpin Français, set at 819 m on the NW slopes of the Ballon d’Alsace in the Vosges. It’s a small wooden refuge (built in 1938) used for self-managed stays, including an onsite wood stove and electricity (a plug is provided). The hut sleeps 12: 10 on a mezzanine plus 2 at the entrance level. Use is autogestion; entry is by key left in a code box, and guests take care of cleaning and carrying out their own trash.
Practical setup includes a water fountain in front of the hut (water is not controlled), and a dry toilet. Bedding is not fully provided: duvets are available, and you must bring an individual sheet/drap-sac (including pillowcase). Onsite cooking gear includes a kitchen/cooking area plus a refrigerator, oven, and microwave. Bookings and availability are managed through the hut’s FFCAM reservation system (with some dates marked unavailable). Nearby hiking networks include the GR7, GR 533, and GR 5; in winter, access to the Ballon d’Alsace skiing area is nearby, and the MTB route 14 passes close to the chalet.
