Alpine hutCone Hut is a Department of Conservation backcountry hut in Tararua Forest Park (Wairarapa), near the Tauwharenīkau River. The hut is a basic six-bunk slab hut that was built by the Tararua Tramping Club and later rebuilt/restored using the same slab-wall construction method and materials.
Use is free and no bookings are required—this is first come, first served for the six bunks. The hut has a fireplace and pit latrine toilets, with no drinking water provided; it’s best accessed from Waiohine Gorge Road end (about 2 hr 30 min from there), while approaches from Marchant Road end (about 8–9 hr) and from other nearby huts are longer walks.
