Mangatoetoe Hut
Mangatoetoe Hut is a Department of Conservation standard six-bunk backcountry hut in Aorangi Forest Park (Wairarapa region), set up for overnight stays on multiday trips in the Aorangi area. It runs as a first-come, first-served hut—no bookings—and the hut is supplied with an open fire and standard mattresses, with water available from an untreated supply and toilets provided as a pit latrine.
Built by the New Zealand Forest Service in 1978, the hut was originally planned for a different location (Te Kopi) but was redesigned and transported after erosion made the intended site unusable. For planning, typical access times listed from nearby road/huts are about 1 hr 30 min (4.5 km) from Cape Palliser Road via Mangatoetoe Stream, or about 2 hr 30 min to 3 hr 30 min (6.2 km) via Aorangi Crossing toward Kawakawa Hut.
