Howitt Hut
Howitt Hut is a remote backcountry hut and camping area in Victoria’s Alpine National Park, built in the early 20th century and tied to the Wonnangatta Drive. It’s used mainly for emergency shelter/rest rather than as a booking-based accommodation destination.
The camping area includes about 5 small, unpowered camping sites and horse yards. Basic facilities are provided, including a pit toilet and long-drop/composting toilet, plus non-potable rainwater (boil water well before drinking). A basic fireplace is available; generators are prohibited and pets/dogs are not allowed.
Use is free and is handled on a first-come, first-served basis (no booking system). Getting in usually requires high-clearance 4WD, and winter closures apply—so check changed-conditions/closures before you travel and plan around the possibility of road and vehicle access being cut.
