Kahui Hut

Kahui Hut is a backcountry hut run by the Department of Conservation, set on the western slopes of Taranaki Maunga in Te Papa-Kura-o-Taranaki, in a small clearing surrounded by native bush. It’s a small hut with 6 bunk beds and no standard bookings required—stays operate on a first come, first served basis, with hut tickets placed in the honesty box for each night’s stay.

Get to Kahui Hut as a 6 hour return walk from Kahui Road on the Kahui Track or from Puniho Road on the Puniho Track. Toilet is via a short walk to a containment tank toilet, and there’s cold running water sourced from a rainwater tank. The hut has no heating; fees apply ($10 per adult 18+, $5 for youth 5–17, free for children/infants 0–4), and you’ll need a Standard Hut Ticket (blue for adults, yellow for youth) for each night; a Backcountry Hut Pass can also cover stays. A 4–5 day loop route (Around the Mountain Circuit) can be used to reach the hut as well, with a track approach described as advanced/expert.
