Kirtle Burn Hut

Kirtle Burn Hut is a standard seven-bunk backcountry hut in the Pisa Conservation Area (Otago) run by the Department of Conservation. It’s a booking-based hut with standard bunk accommodation and designed for backcountry overnights in the Wanaka/Makarora area.

Bookings are required and are first-come, first-served (no waiting list for already-booked facilities or future seasons). Fees apply, and Backcountry Hut Passes can be used at this hut. The hut has mattresses, toilets (pit latrine disposal), but no drinking water and no fireplace—plan to bring what you need for cooking and water.

Bookings open on Thursday 10 July 2025 for stays from 11 July 2025 to 30 June 2026, with adult, youth, and child/infant fee levels listed; rates change from 1 July 2026. The return trip to the hut is listed as about 6 hours and rated intermediate (NZTopo50 map sheet CB12).
