Lost Lake Hut
Lost Lake Hut is a Kootenay Mountaineering Club backcountry cabin in the Bonnington Range, placed on the eastern shoulder of Commonwealth mountain, a few minutes’ hike above Lost Lake. It’s built for the Bonnington Traverse finish option and is primarily accessed from Copper hut along a modified traverse, with an alternate day approach from Porto Rico Rd. near Ymir. The hut was built in 2023 and is intended for public hut bookings.
Sleeping is in a loft with no foam mattresses; the hut includes a dining table, benches and chairs, plus a wood stove. Basic cooking utensils are stored in a cupboard, and there’s also a two-burner propane cook stove that requires bringing your own 1 lb propane bottles. Water is available from the Lost Lake outflow or from the lake itself (filter/treat if you don’t boil). Solar lighting is basic and you’ll need your own headlamp or LED lights to supplement. Dogs are not permitted, and candles and lanterns are also not permitted. The two-hectare area around the cabin is designated non-motorized only, with all motor vehicles—terrestrial or airborne—prohibited within the vicinity of the cabin.
Public hut use is $25 per person, per night with a 3-night maximum; bookings are required and include hut terms and conditions prior to booking. Access via helicopter is not permitted, and if you access by snowmobile, you must leave your machine at or below the lake due to an established non-motorized zone around the cabin.
