Mangaroa Hut
Mangaroa Hut is a backcountry hunting A-frame cabin on the East Taupo Lands Trust Block on Maori-owned land, managed through the heli-hunting block system. It sleeps up to 4 on bunks, and the cabin is supplied with most basics—bring your own lighting. A meatsafe is provided, and there’s space to bivvy in the gully west of the hut if the cabin is full or if you prefer to sleep out.
Use is tied to hunting-block rules on private land: deer bag limits are set per person and per party, DOC hunting permits are required if you’re hunting on adjacent DOC land, and there are explicit restrictions on shooting stags in velvet and on night shooting/spot-light/thermal or night-vision equipment. Land fees apply: $75 NZD per person per night plus a $5 NZD service fee. Access is remote and typically requires helicopter travel arranged as part of the booking process.
