Upper Matakuhia Hut

Upper Matakuhia Hut is a Department of Conservation basic eight-bunk backcountry hut in Waipunga Forest (East Coast region). It’s set up for straightforward overnights on the Matakuhia Track, with use described as free and no bookings required—first come, first served. Sleeping is in bunks, and the hut includes a fireplace, but the fireplace can’t be used.

To reach the hut, walk from Matakuhia car park. Follow the Matakuhia Track and stream south for 6.5 km to Upper Matakuhia Hut. The trip is accessed via either a northern approach from Minginui Village or a southern approach from SH5: both routes end at Matakuhia car park via unsealed forestry roads in a public easement. Toilet facilities are provided, with pit latrine disposal. There’s no drinking water provided, so bring your own water supplies.
