Philip J Cox Memorial Hut
Philip J Cox Memorial Hut is a Department of Conservation backcountry hut in the Silverpeaks Scenic Reserve (Otago). It’s a standard 4-bunk hut, with 4 beds available on a first-come, first-served basis; no standard bookings are required. Basic facilities include a mattress and a pit latrine, with drinking water provided but untreated.
Access is off SH1 at Waitati, north of Dunedin, via Double Hill Road/Mountain Road. There’s a fee to use the hut: $10 per night for adults (18+), $5 per night for youth (5–17), and free for children/infants (0–4). To stay, buy 1 Standard Hut Ticket for each night and place it in the honesty box at the hut. Fires aren’t permitted in the Silverpeaks at any time, and the grass pad beside the hut is reserved for an emergency helicopter landing—don’t camp in that space.
