Possum Hut

Possum Hut is a historic Depression-era hut in Silver Peaks Scenic Reserve on the head of the Waikouaiti River South Branch (Otago). It’s in very poor condition and isn’t a usable accommodation option—treat it as a heritage feature only.

A short route (about 900 m return) leads to the hut from the Silverpeaks Circuit Track, as a side trip off the main marked route. Expect it to be used as an “out-and-back” visit within a larger overnight-capable tramp, but the overall Silverpeaks country is exposed and can change quickly, with flash flooding possible after heavy rain.
