Powell Hut
Powell Hut is a Department of Conservation serviced backcountry hut in the Holdsworth area within Tararua Forest Park. It has 32 bunk beds and is a booked hut (no spaces held for arrivals without a booking). Dogs aren’t allowed in backcountry huts, and hunters must follow the Arms Code; disorderly conduct is handled with local police.
The hut includes a kitchen and dining area, toilets with pit latrine disposal, and drinking water that is untreated. It’s accessible via Holdsworth Road end and is on the popular Mt Holdsworth–Jumbo Circuit; typical one-way walk time to Powell Hut is about 5 hours (intermediate). Fees apply (with separate rates for weekdays vs Saturdays and different age categories), and bookings are open for stays up to 30 June 2027.
