Puteore Hut
Puteore Hut is a Department of Conservation standard six-bunk backcountry hut in the Waitōtara Conservation Area (Manawatū/Whanganui region). It’s set up for overnight stays on the Puniwhakau Track area, with an in-hut wood fire and toilets (pit latrine, with disposal by pit).
Use is first come, first served—no standard bookings are required. To stay overnight, you need a Standard Hut Ticket for each night (place it in the honesty box at the hut), or alternatively use a Backcountry Hut Pass for unlimited use at most standard and serviced huts for a 12-month period. Prices run $10 per adult night and $5 per youth night (30 June 2026), with $0 for children/infants (0–4 years).
The hut has six bunk beds and includes mattresses and drinking water that’s untreated; plan to treat water before drinking. An unsafe bridge closure affects access: the track from the Puniwhakau Road end to Puteore Hut is closed until further notice.
