Waingongoro Hut

Waingongoro Hut is a Department of Conservation serviced backcountry hut in the Dawson Falls area of Te Papa-Kura-o-Taranaki (Taranaki region), ideal for a short tramp or an overnight stay. It has 16 bunk beds in shared bunkrooms and uses platform bunks with mattresses; cold running water is supplied from a rainwater tank and a fireplace with wood supplied is available.

Plan your approach around two common walking routes: Dawson Falls via Wilkies Pools Track or Ridge Track and Waingongoro Track (about 1 hr 20 min / 2.5 km one way), or East Egmont via Waingongoro Track (about 1 hr 40 min / 3.5 km one way). The hut sits high above the Waingongoro Stream on a cliff-side setting with no barrier near the edge—keep a close eye on children—and don’t walk or camp on the helipad. No bookings are required; use is first come, first served.

The hut is fitted with a containment tank toilet reached via a short walk from the hut, and it has pit latrine waste disposal. Fees apply (adult 18+ $25 per night; child/youth 5–17 $12.50 per night; infants 0–4 free through 30 June 2026), paid via hut tickets placed in the honesty box for each night’s stay (or a Backcountry Hut Pass for unlimited use at most serviced and standard huts for a 12 month period). Bring a sleeping bag, a cooking stove with pots/pans/utensils, toilet paper, a rubbish bag, and items needed for the fireplace such as matches/lighter for the wood burner; in winter, tracks to the hut can be muddy or covered in snow.
