Red Shirt Cabin #3

Red Shirt Cabin #3 is a public-use backcountry wilderness hut in Nancy Lake State Recreation Area, Alaska. The cabin is a wood-heated structure with a fire ring and picnic table, and it has a wood-stove setup (bring your own wood). It’s small: it sleeps up to 8 people and has a 5-night stay limit.

Access is by floatplane, or in summer via a hike and canoe. The summer route is a 3-mile hike from the Red Shirt Lake trailhead at the end of Nancy Lake Parkway, followed by crossing Red Shirt Lake to reach the cabin; you must carry a canoe (or arrange a canoe rental ahead of time). In winter, access is by plane or the winter trail for about 7.5–8 miles using registered snowmobile, skis, snowshoes, or dog sled; ATVs are prohibited, and the Red Shirt Lake cabins aren’t reachable during freeze-up or break-up when the ice is too thin to support weight.

Use is reservation-based. Reservations for this cabin are handled through Reserve America, with stays capped at the cabin’s 5-night limit and check-in/out at 12:00pm. Renters need to bring essentials including a sleeping bag and pad/air mattress, food and cookware, stove fuel and matches/lighter, a 9-volt battery for smoke detectors, first-aid items, trash bags, and a jug of water (firewood is also needed for the wood stove). Pets are allowed but must be kept under control and users are responsible for cleanup.
