Red Shirt Lake Cabin #4

Red Shirt Lake Cabin #4 is a public use wilderness hut in the Nancy Lake State Recreation Area, managed for backcountry stays. Use is reservation-based through Reserve America, with a nightly price of $60 and a $5 transaction fee per booking.

It’s a basic shelter: you bring your own water, fuel, and food. Access is by a 3-mile hike from the Nancy Lake Parkway trailhead to Red Shirt Lake, followed by crossing the lake (you need your own canoe or can rent one locally). In winter, the lake is reached via an 8-mile winter trail suitable for snowmobiles, skis, or snowshoes when snow cover allows.

Park rules include a 300-foot no-camping buffer around public use cabins (no tenting or overnight stays within that distance). The hut has a fireplace, so you’ll need firewood appropriate to the cabin rules; also bring insect protection for warmer months and be ready for Alaska’s variable weather.
