Refuge de la Morte

Refuge de la Morte is a free, self-service backcountry stop for walkers in the Forez area (Vallee de la Morte, near Chalmazel–Jeansagnière). It’s open year-round and runs without reservations or staffing, with shared use among visitors.

Inside there is a closed sleeping loft with double glazing, plus a table area; there’s also a fireplace for heating and cooking, along with outdoor tables and benches under cover. The refuge was fully renovated in 2018 and includes an exterior wood-processing setup (saw and firewood); bring your own sleeping gear and plan to manage waste yourself—there are no toilets or bins. Facilities are very basic: no potable water or electricity is provided on site.
