Sayer Hut
Sayer Hut is a standard six-bunk backcountry hut in Tararua Forest Park (Wairarapa), run by the Department of Conservation. It’s first come, first served (no bookings required), with fees collected via an honesty box and options including a Standard Hut Ticket (adult and youth versions) or a Backcountry Hut Pass for unlimited use at most Standard and Serviced huts for 12 months.
The hut has drinking water that is untreated, sleeping provisions (mattresses), and a fireplace; toilets are provided as a pit latrine. Access is described for the track between the Waiohine Gorge Roadend and Totara Flats Hut by crossing the Waiohine River—there are no bridges or formal tracks, and the crossing is hazardous, so it should only be attempted by people experienced with unbridged river crossings.
