Snowbird Hut
Snowbird Hut is a backcountry wilderness hut in the Talkeetna Mountains on the northern edge of the Snowbird Glacier, accessible from Archangel Valley near Hatcher Pass. It’s open to the public, free to use, and managed on an open basis with no reservations required.
Plan to share the hut with other backcountry parties; if more people arrive during your stay, you’re expected to make room out of respect and consideration. The hut accommodates 6–12 people using two double and two single bunks, plus overflow space in the loft, and it’s maintained through private donations and volunteer labor.
For staying warm, bring kerosene if you want heat (no diesel; no white gas). Ski storage racks are provided outside—skis should not go inside the hut—and don’t leave extra food or supplies around the hut, since that attracts critters and creates clutter. The hut includes a heater, a cooking area with dishes and a camp stove, bunks and a loft, lanterns that use white gas or unleaded gas, and an outhouse nearby. Use outdoors-style capacity management: expect to cook and eat using the provided gear and plan your own supplies.
