Sparrowhawk Bivouac

Sparrowhawk Bivouac is a Department of Conservation basic two-bunk hut in Ruahine Forest Park (Hawke’s Bay region). It sits in a sheltered basin below Maropea Peak at about 1350 m, and can face extreme weather conditions at altitude.

Use is free and no bookings are required—it's first come, first served. The bivouac has two bunk beds; water comes from a rainwater tank, toilets are pit latrine style, and there is no fireplace. Access is on foot from the Wakarara Road area only; from the road end there’s no vehicle access into the park, and you’ll need to cross the Makaroro River (expect wet feet).
