Tauanui Hut
Tauanui Hut is a standard six-bunk backcountry hut in Aorangi Forest Park, managed by the Department of Conservation. It’s set up for an overnight stay with an open fire, mattresses, and pit latrine toilets, and it’s the kind of hut you access by planning and navigating your own way (there’s no DOC track access).
Bookings aren’t required; use is first come, first served for the six bunks. Before your stay, buy a Standard Hut Ticket for each night and place it in the honesty box at the hut (or use a Backcountry Hut Pass for unlimited use at most Standard and Serviced huts over a 12-month period). Fees are listed for stays up to 30 June 2026, and rates change from 1 July 2026. Access from Pirinoa is by Whakatomotomo Road (off Lake Ferry Road), then along a forestry access road to a forestry gate where you park before walking up toward the Tauanui River and the Aorangi Forest Park boundary and on to Tauanui Hut.
