Totara Flats Hut
Totara Flats Hut is a DOC backcountry hut in Tararua Forest Park, used as an overnight stop for trips into the Waiohine Valley. The hut has platform bunks in two bunkrooms and provides wood heat via a wood burner; drinking water is from inside taps fed by a rain collection tank. It also has a cooking/dining area and a pit latrine toilet a short walk from the hut.
The hut is set up for 26 bunk beds. Fees apply (adult $25 per night, youth $12.50 per night, child/infant free through 30 June 2026) and bookings are serviced: bookings are open up to 30 June 2027, with no spaces kept for arrivals without a booking when the hut is shown fully booked online. What to bring includes a sleeping bag, a cooking stove plus pots/pans/utensils, toilet paper, rubbish bag, and items needed for the wood burner (newspaper/firelighters and matches/lighter), plus a torch.
