Triplex Hut

Triplex Hut is a 12-bunk backcountry hut operated by the Department of Conservation in Ruahine Forest Park (Hawke’s Bay). It’s close to the road end at about 630 m, so it’s often used as an easy overnight base for school/family groups and novice trampers. Inside, you’ll find two bunkrooms, tank water supply, and a woodburner for heating.

Access is via North Block Road from State Highway 50: turn toward the ranges onto Wakarara Road, continue about 20 km to a left into North Block Road, then drive to the road end. The last 4 km goes through private farmland, so leave gates as you find them and don’t disturb stock; from the car park, follow the farm track for about 10 minutes to reach the hut just inside the park boundary. The hut has untreated drinking water, a wood fire is available, and toilets are pit latrines; fees apply and bookings are required year-round, with online bookings open for stays up to 30 June 2027. Bookings are for any bunk bed (not a specific bunk) and the hut is fully booked if no availability shows for your dates; no spaces are kept for arrivals without a booking.
