Tutuwai Hut

Tutuwai Hut is a Department of Conservation backcountry hut in Tararua Forest Park, sitting alongside the Tauwharenīkau River in the Tauwharenīkau Valley. It’s a 20-bunk hut set up for standard hut use and operated on a first come, first served basis—no standard bookings are required.

Inside, bunks sleep 20 on platform bunks with mattresses, with a wood burner for heating and shared living/dining space partially divided from the bunks by partition walls. Water comes via inside taps providing cold water from a rain collection tank; a long drop toilet is a short walk from the hut and disposal is via pit latrine. Firewood is not provided (DOC changed the service standard to Standard), so plan to bring your own. Fees apply: $10 per night for adults (18+), $5 per night for youth (5–17), and free for children/infants (0–4); you buy a Standard Hut Ticket (in the honesty box at the hut) for each night’s stay or use a Backcountry Hut Pass.
