Youngman Stream Hut

Youngman Stream Hut is a standard six-bunk backcountry hut run by the Department of Conservation in the Puketeraki Forest Conservation Area (Canterbury region). It’s first come, first served with no bookings required, and you use hut tickets for your overnight stay—put the correct Standard Hut Ticket in the honesty box at the hut for each night. A track to the hut is closed between 1 August and 30 September and during the entire month of April.

The hut has a fireplace, mattresses, and toilets with pit latrine disposal. It’s foot access only from the locked gate on the Youngman Stream Track area; the DOC route is Lees Valley Road to a sign and locked gate (private farmland beyond), then a marked track to another locked gate and onward on the marked track. For timing, DOC lists the Lees Valley Road approach as about 4–5 hours one way via the Youngman Stream Track.
