Aspiring Hut

Aspiring Hut is a backcountry hut in the Matukituki Valley area of Mount Aspiring National Park, run by the Department of Conservation. It has historic stone-walled accommodation with 32 bunk beds and is available for overnight use via a bunk-bed booking process year-round.

The hut has basic facilities including a wood burner, kitchen area, mattresses, and toilets (pit latrine disposal). Fees apply for stays, and bookings are required; after King’s Birthday weekend (early June) through Labour weekend (late October) facilities are reduced, including the period when there is no hut warden and no cookers—so plan to bring a cooker if needed for your trip. Aspiring Hut sits in a known landslide debris path; a temporary closure can be triggered when very heavy rainfall is forecast (>250 mm in 24 hours).
