Ben Avon Hut (historic)

Ben Avon Hut (historic) is a heritage hut site in New Zealand’s South Island that’s used as a day-use historical waypoint rather than an overnight backcountry shelter. It’s managed purely as a heritage site, so standard hut services like sleeping accommodation and cooking/water infrastructure aren’t part of the experience.

To reach it, use the Dingle Burn Track, linking through the Ahuriri–Dingle Burn Saddle and past Top Dingle Hut. The historic hut stop is encountered on a longer day outing that runs roughly 5–6 hours from the Birchwood Road trailhead (17 km west of Omarama) when taken as described by local route write-ups.
