Cameron Hut
Cameron Hut is a Department of Conservation backcountry hut in Kaweka Forest Park (Hawke’s Bay), positioned on the south-western boundary on the banks of the Ngaruroro River. It’s a base for hunting, fishing and tramping, and also works as a stopover when moving into more remote western areas of the park.
The hut has 6 bunks and an open fireplace suitable for cooking. Stream water is supplied from the Ngaruroro River; there’s also a meat safe and a long-drop style toilet with pit latrine disposal. Use is first come, first served—no bookings are required, but you must buy a Standard Hut Ticket for each night and place it in the honesty box at the hut (or use a Backcountry Hut Pass for unlimited use at most standard and serviced huts for a 12-month period). Fees are listed through 30 June 2026; adult (18+) is $10 per night and youth (5–17) is $5 per night, with children/infants (0–4) free.
Access follows the Ngaruroro River from the Cameron Carpark. The track is not maintained and the right bank is private land; expect at least 30 river crossings, which can only be negotiated when the river is not in flood. If the river is in flood, a longer alternative is to go via the Smith-Russell track over Kuripapango Hill, then head towards Kiwi Saddle Hut and descend to Cameron Hut.
