Manson Hut is a backcountry hut in Kaweka Forest Park (the “Manson Country”) managed by the Department of Conservation. It sits at about 1,280 m altitude on level ground below a ridge, separated from the rest of the park by the Ngaruroro River, and is used as a base for hunting and as a tramping stop-over for exploring the more remote western areas of Kaweka Forest Park.

Use at the hut is first come, first served (no standard bookings required), but you must buy a Standard Hut Ticket for each night and place it in the honesty box at the hut (or use a backcountry hut pass that provides unlimited use at most standard and serviced huts for a 12-month period). The hut has 6 bunk beds and a wood/coal burning stove for cooking, with a rainwater tank supply, a meat safe, and a long-drop style toilet; there’s also a dog kennel with special conditions. The hut is built for year-round use and can see brief snowfalls and heavy winter frosts in cold periods.
