Central Whirinaki Hut

Central Whirinaki Hut is a 25-bunk backcountry hut run by the Department of Conservation, set in Whirinaki Te Pua-a-Tāne Conservation Park by the Whirinaki River. It sits in a clearing of beech trees and serves as the gateway hut for the Whirinaki circuit, making it a popular overnight option on the Whirinaki Track and the Te Hoe Circuit.

Use is first come, first served and serviced bookings aren’t required. A toilet is provided (pit latrine) and drinking water is untreated, so treat before use. The hut has a kitchen area and a good fire, but firewood isn’t constant—plan to be prepared for no firewood. Fees apply: hut tickets are required via an honesty box (Adult 18+ $25 per night; Child/youth 5–17 $12.50; Infant 0–4 free), and camping has separate rates (Adult $10; Youth $5; Infant free).
