Cotters Hut
Cotters Hut is a two-bunk backcountry hut in Hāwea Conservation Park (Otago), run by the Department of Conservation for walkers using the Wanaka/Makarora area. Use is first come, first served—standard bookings aren’t required, but you do need a Standard Hut Ticket for each night in an honesty box at the hut. Fees are listed as $10 per night for adults (18+), $5 per night for youth (5–17), and free for children/infants (0–4).
The hut has a fireplace and a mattress, with toilets provided via a pit latrine; there’s no drinking water supplied. The route to the hut is described on the NZTopo50 CA13 map sheet (Wānaka Tititea/Mount Aspiring National Park visitor centre area), and the hut’s trip is generally given as 3–4 days with advanced difficulty.
