Dominie Hut
Dominie Hut is a Department of Conservation backcountry stop in Kaweka Forest Park, reached on foot from Makahu Saddle Carpark (about 80 minutes). It’s a small basic/bivvy-style hut with 2 bunk beds and a tank water supply; bring water-handling for untreated supply.
Use is free and no bookings are required—first come, first served. The toilet is a long-drop style with pit latrine disposal, and there’s no fireplace. The bivouac was built in 1968 by the NZ Forest Service; it’s on the Makahu Spur single-covered route to Kaweka J, and the spur can experience strong-to-gale northwest winds or very cold southerly changes with high precipitation including snow in winter.
