Harkness Hut
Harkness Hut is a Department of Conservation backcountry hut in Kaweka Forest Park (Hawke’s Bay region). It’s a small base for tramping stops on the Ngaawapurua (Harkness) Stream, reached by walking about 10 minutes up a side tributary stream from the approach route.
The hut has 6 bunks, with a wood-burning stove and rainwater supply from a tank. Food storage is provided with a meat safe, and toilets are long-drop pit latrine style. Built in 1961, it was upgraded in the early 1990s, including a covered veranda looking over the stream valley.
Standard hut bookings aren’t required—use is first come, first served. Fees apply, with the guidance on the official hut ticket/pass process requiring a Standard Hut Ticket (or Backcountry Hut Pass) for each night of use. The hut is also listed as having a helipad about 45 m in front of the hut.
