Downs Hut
Downs Hut is a backcountry hut on the Heaphy Track in Kahurangi National Park (New Zealand). It’s a small 8-bunk hut with communal sleeping arrangements, and it’s set up for self-sufficient hut stays with cold running water and long-drop toilets.
Use is booked year-round. Bring your own sleeping bag and cooking setup; the hut doesn’t have gas cooking facilities, lighting, or showers, so plan for basic comforts only and pack a stove and utensils. Hut rules include keeping the hut clean and sharing space considerately, and you may encounter hut rangers who move between huts in summer to check hut bookings and provide track information.
