Dubious Bivvy
Dubious Bivvy is a basic DOC 2-bunk backcountry hut in Ka Whata Tu o Rakihouia / Clarence, Marlborough. It’s used on a first-come, first-served basis with no bookings required and free use; the hut has 2 bunk beds, bedding/mattress is provided, and toilets are a pit latrine type. There’s no fireplace and no drinking water provided.
Access into the Clarence area is via Blind Saddle Road. From Kaikoura, follow SH1 south for 5 km to the Waiau/Mt Lyford turnoff and continue inland to the car park at Kahutara River bridge (25 km from Kaikoura); a locked gate restricts horse and vehicle access, and motorised vehicles incur a road maintenance fee. The road is closed to vehicles over winter months, and there is no DOC track access to the hut—plan your route and navigate yourself using map, compass, and GPS, and be prepared for unbridged river crossings if needed.
