Elder Hut

Elder Hut is a standard four-bunk backcountry hut in Tararua Forest Park (Wellington/Kapiti region). It’s run by the Department of Conservation Te Papa Atawhai and is linked to other huts on Renata Ridge, including Renata, Kime, and Alpha huts (approximate travel times: Renata Hut 4–5 hr, Alpha Hut 3–4 hr).

Sleeping and use are set up for hut-ticket access: standard bookings aren’t required and stays are first come, first served. Before going, you buy a Standard Hut Ticket for each night and put it in the honesty box at the hut; alternatively, a Backcountry Hut Pass can provide unlimited use at most Standard and Serviced huts over a 12-month period. Fees are listed as $10 per night for adults (18+), $5 per night for youth (5–17), and free for children/infants (0–4). The hut has drinking water available only as untreated water, and toilet facilities are a pit latrine. No fireplace is provided.
