Kapakapanui Hut

Kapakapanui Hut is a standard six-bunk backcountry hut in Tararua Forest Park, run by the Department of Conservation in the Wellington/Kapiti region. Use is straightforward: no bookings are required and stays are first come, first served; put a Standard Hut Ticket in the honesty box for each night you use the hut (or use a Backcountry Hut Pass for unlimited use at most Standard and Serviced huts for a 12-month period).

Sleeping and basics are limited and practical. The hut has 6 bunks and provides mattresses; water is untreated and the toilet is a pit latrine. There’s a fee: adult (18+) $10 per night, youth (5–17) $5 per night, and children/infants (0–4) free—these rates are for stays up to 30 June 2026, with new rates applying from 1 July 2026. It’s best accessed from Ngatiawa Road: 3–4 hours from the Ngatiawa Road end to the hut without going via the summit, or 4–5 hours via the summit; tracks to the hut are part of a 7–9 hour loop from Ngatiawa Rd via the summit.
