Field Hut
Field Hut is a Department of Conservation backcountry hut in the Ōtaki Forks area and Tararua Forest Park (Kapiti/Wellington region), used for tramping and hunters needing an overnight base. It sits just below the bushline at about 900 m, and is a historic hut built in 1924 by the Tararua Tramping Club; it’s the oldest surviving recreational hut in the Tararua Ranges.
The hut has 20 bunk beds and is set up for standard overnight use; bookings aren’t required and stays are first-come, first-served. Fees apply and you use the honesty system: buy a Standard Hut Ticket for each night and place it in the honesty box at the hut (or use a Backcountry Hut Pass). The hut provides drinking water described as untreated, a fireplace, mattresses, and toilets with pit-latrine disposal.
