Evans Hut
Evans Hut is a Department of Conservation–managed backcountry hut in the Rangitata/Rakaia Rivers area of Canterbury, used as a basic six-bunk shelter for overnighters. It’s a first-come, first-served hut—bookings aren’t required—and it includes a fireplace, mattresses, and toilets with a pit latrine disposal system.
The hut site has untreated drinking water available. The refuge is tied to the NZ Deerstalkers’ Association (Rakaia branch): a suggested donation is $10 per person per night, left in the honesty box in the hut.
