Fern Burn Hut
Fern Burn Hut is a standard 12-bunk backcountry hut in the Wānaka area, operated by the Department of Conservation. It sits on the Te Araroa Trail and can be busy during summer; access to the hut is via an easement agreement on Motatapu Station Pastoral Lease.
Hut use is first come, first served and bookings aren’t required, but fees apply. Sleeping is in provided mattresses (no fireplace). Drinking water is untreated; toilets use a pit latrine system. A Standard Hut Ticket (blue for adults, yellow for youth) is required for each night’s stay, or a Backcountry Hut Pass can be used for unlimited use at most Standard and Serviced huts for a 12-month period.
